Stump grinding that finishes the job

Once the tree's gone, the stump is still in the way — tripping the mower, attracting pests, and sitting ugly in the middle of your yard. We grind it down below grade and clean up the mess so the spot's ready for grass or whatever's next.

One Tree Service stump grinder machine grinding a tree stump into mulch in a manicured lawn in Brookfield, Missouri

What stump grinding involves

Stump grinding uses a dedicated machine to chew the stump down well below ground level — typically 6–12 inches deep — so it's out of sight and won't resprout. We then haul or pile the grindings and leave the area clean.

It's faster, cleaner, and less disruptive than full stump 'removal' (digging out the whole root ball), and it leaves the surrounding lawn intact so you can replant or sod right over it.

Why have a pro do it

  • A stump grinder is heavy equipment — we bring the right machine and the know-how.
  • We grind deep enough that the stump won't resprout or poke back up.
  • We watch for irrigation, pipes, and lines before we start.
  • We clean up the grindings instead of leaving a pile of mulch on your lawn.
  • It removes a tripping hazard and frees the yard for mowing, sod, or a new tree.

Stump Grinding questions we hear

How deep do you grind a stump?

Typically 6–12 inches below ground level — deep enough that the stump won't resprout and the area can be sodded or replanted over. We can go deeper if you're building on the spot.

Do you remove the whole root ball?

Full root-ball excavation tears up a lot of lawn. Grinding the stump below grade is faster, cleaner, and leaves the surrounding yard intact — which is what most homeowners want.

What happens to the wood chips?

We can haul them off or leave them neatly piled for you to use as mulch — your call. Either way, the area gets raked and tidied.

Can you grind a stump in a tight spot near a fence or house?

Usually yes — we use appropriately sized grinders and take care around hardscape, irrigation, and lines. We'll tell you upfront if access is an issue.
